Information

This very rare floor lamp, model K10-13, was designed by Paavo Tynell and produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp is an exquisite example of mid-century Scandinavian modern lighting, combining refined materials with a minimalist yet elegant structure.

The lamp features a slender brass stem supported by a circular brass base, ensuring both stability and a visually lightweight appearance. A distinctive design feature is the cane-wrapped section on the stem, which adds a tactile contrast to the polished brass, further enhancing the lamp’s elegant appeal. The original conical lampshade is made of woven fabric with a natural texture, which softly diffuses the light. The lampshade’s slightly tapered profile contributes to the overall balanced proportions of the lamp.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a celebrated Finnish industrial designer renowned for his lighting designs, which masterfully combined functionality with decorative craftsmanship. Often called “The man who illuminated Finland”, Tynell was a key figure in Scandinavian modernist lighting. His work was characterized by delicate perforated brass details, organic forms, and an emphasis on materiality, drawing from both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary modernist influences.

Idman, a Finnish lighting manufacturer, was well-known for producing high-quality lighting fixtures in collaboration with notable designers. The company played an instrumental role in shaping Nordic lighting design during the mid-20th century, blending technical precision with aesthetic sophistication in their products.

This lamp remains in its original condition, with visible patina on the brass components that reflect its age and use. The cane wrapping remains intact, contributing to its authenticity and vintage charm.

The dimensions of the lamp are 157.5 cm (62 inches) in height, with a lampshade diameter of 49 cm (19.3 inches), making it a striking and functional piece that captures the essence of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design.
