Wall candlestick
This rare wall-mounted candlestick, produced in Sweden during the 1950s by an unknown designer, is an excellent representation of the minimalist yet expressive qualities typical of mid-century Scandinavian decorative arts. Constructed entirely from brass, the piece showcases the restrained aesthetic and functional elegance that define the Scandinavian modernist tradition. The candlestick features a slender vertical profile, composed of two elongated brass rods that are bent into a narrow, symmetrical arch at the top. The rods are joined at intervals with small brass sleeves, forming a balanced and clean structure. The design is mounted on a flat brass backplate, which provides support and serves as the surface for wall installation.
Suspended from a horizontal brass pin at the top, the candlestick’s frame holds a shallow, circular drip tray and candle holder at the base. The geometric design is both delicate and architectural, utilizing simple linear forms and subtle symmetry to create visual interest with minimal material. The brass surface has developed a warm, oxidized patina consistent with age, including natural darkening and occasional spotting. These markings enhance the piece’s authenticity and vintage appeal, adding depth to the overall aesthetic.
While the designer of this candlestick remains unidentified, the piece reflects the hallmarks of Scandinavian modernism—emphasizing precision craftsmanship, functional elegance, and restraint in ornamentation. Wall-mounted brass candlesticks of this nature were often produced in small batches by local artisans or boutique lighting and decor workshops. They are typically simple in form yet rich in materiality, offering both functionality and a sculptural presence in the home.
In terms of condition, the candlestick remains in good vintage condition, with age-appropriate wear visible on the brass surface. This includes minor tarnishing, surface marks, and the natural oxidation typical of brass over time. Despite these signs of age, the piece remains structurally sound and fully functional, retaining its original proportions and hardware.
