Information

This rare pair of Sirocco easy chairs, designed in 1964 by Arne Norell and produced by Arne Norell AB in Aneby, Sweden, is a quintessential example of the safari chair genre reinterpreted through the lens of Scandinavian modernism. With their collapsible structure, refined material palette, and effortless silhouette, the Sirocco chairs embody the fusion of functional portability and elegant craftsmanship.

The frames are crafted from solid rosewood, known for its rich reddish-brown tones and striking grain variation. The wood is smoothly finished and carefully shaped, with rounded edges and tapered legs that contribute to the light, architectural presence of the design. Brass fittings are used at the connection points, not only serving a structural purpose but also adding a warm metallic accent that complements the depth of the rosewood.

The design is based on the principles of traditional campaign and safari furniture, featuring a lightweight, knock-down construction that requires no mechanical fasteners. The stability of the frame relies on the tension created by the leather components, allowing the chair to be disassembled and reassembled with ease—a concept derived from early 20th-century field furniture but executed here with far greater sophistication and aesthetic finesse.

Each chair retains its original leather upholstery in a natural, patinated finish. The seat, backrest, and armrests are suspended in sling fashion by leather straps, a hallmark of Norell’s design approach. The leather shows an even, well-developed patina, with minor scuffs and natural creases that reflect age and careful use. The original stitching remains intact, and the straps maintain their structural integrity, testifying to the durability and high-quality materials used in the original production.

The overall condition of the chairs is excellent vintage. The rosewood frames are in outstanding shape, with minimal surface wear and a consistent finish. The leather components exhibit natural signs of age that enhance the character of the chairs without compromising function or comfort.
