Arne Norell easy chairs
This pair of very rare easy chairs, known as model Gary or Thumb, was designed by Arne Norell and produced by Gösta Westerberg in Sweden in 1952. The chairs exemplify mid-century Scandinavian modern design through their organic shapes, careful craftsmanship, and the use of high-quality materials. The design reflects a commitment to combining functional comfort with aesthetic refinement characteristic of the period.
The frames are crafted from solid beech wood, a hardwood favored in Scandinavian furniture for its durability, strength, and relatively light weight. The legs are tapered and subtly angled, contributing to the overall stability and balanced proportions of the chairs. The upholstery is original mohair velvet in a deep green tone, a dense and resilient fabric known for its soft luster and ability to age gracefully. The upholstery shows natural signs of wear consistent with its vintage origin, adding to the chairs’ authenticity.
The design features a distinctively curved backrest that wraps around the sitter, enhanced by deep button tufting which gives a sculptural and textured appearance. The armrests are asymmetrical, introducing an element of visual dynamism to the silhouette. The generously padded seat cushions emphasize comfort while maintaining the clean lines typical of Scandinavian modernism. These chairs were initially presented at the Önskehemsutställningen, or The Dream Home Exhibition, in 1952—a venue known for showcasing innovative furniture designs intended for contemporary living.
Each chair measures 70 cm in width, 82 cm in depth, and 79 cm in height (27.6 x 32.3 x 31.1 inches), with proportions that balance ergonomic support and a visually light presence, aligning with the design values of the era.
