Arne Vodder dining table
The rare dining table model 227 was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. This piece embodies key characteristics of mid-century Scandinavian design, emphasizing elegance, adaptability, and high-quality materials. The table’s design offers versatility through its expandable format while maintaining a refined aesthetic.
Constructed primarily of solid teak and teak veneer, the table displays a warm honey-brown tone with straight, consistent grain typical of carefully selected Scandinavian teak from the period. It features two drop leaves and additional extension leaves that enable the table to transform from a compact, almost square shape into a long, oval form. The structure is supported by six tapered solid teak legs, which provide stability and contribute to the table’s visual lightness. Brass fittings are subtly integrated into the frame, enhancing both the structural integrity and the overall craftsmanship associated with Sibast’s production standards.
Arne Vodder, trained under the influential Finn Juhl, was renowned for his organic forms and meticulous attention to proportion and detail. His collaboration with Sibast Møbelfabrik produced furniture characterized by modernist principles and sophisticated woodwork. Model 227 is a clear example of Vodder’s commitment to combining clean geometry with soft, rounded contours, as seen in the gently curved drop leaves and the smooth transition between legs and tabletop.
In its compact form, with the drop leaves lowered, the table measures 77.5 cm in width, 106 cm in depth, and 72.5 cm in height (approximately 30.5 inches wide, 41.7 inches deep, and 28.5 inches high). When fully extended using the leaves, the table reaches a length of 290 cm or about 114.2 inches, accommodating a larger seating arrangement. The condition is excellent, showing only light signs of age and careful use. The surface has been well maintained, retaining the original finish with minimal wear consistent with its vintage nature.
