Arne Vodder sideboard
This rare sideboard, model 29, was designed by Danish architect Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbelfabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. It exemplifies Scandinavian modern design through its organic materiality, functional clarity, and a playful yet controlled use of color.
The case is crafted from richly grained rosewood, with vertical surfaces displaying expressive figuring and tonal variation. The sliding doors are lacquered in contrasting matte finishes—one in warm ochre-yellow and the other in a soft white cream—creating a geometric rhythm and dynamic tonal interplay across the façade. This matte lacquer contrasts elegantly with the natural luster of the rosewood veneer.
On the right side, the cabinet incorporates a vertical bank of seven drawers featuring Vodder’s signature sculpted, wave-shaped fronts. These recessed pulls are carved directly into the solid wood, eliminating the need for external hardware and emphasizing craftsmanship. The arrangement balances asymmetry with order, contributing to the sideboard’s harmonious design.
The base consists of tapered round legs joined by a stretcher, all executed in matching rosewood. Its elevated and lightweight profile aligns with mid-century Scandinavian preferences for floating, accessible furniture forms. The top surface includes a subtle raised gallery along the rear edge, a detail typical of Vodder’s refined approach to form and edge treatment.
Arne Vodder (1926–2009) was a leading figure in post-war Danish design, known for his collaborations with Sibast and for furniture that combines expressive woodwork with architectural restraint. Model 29 is a prime example of his ability to marry sculptural detail with practical functionality. Sibast Møbelfabrik was a prominent Danish manufacturer known for high-quality craftsmanship and close collaborations with top designers.
The sideboard measures 182.5 cm in width, 49.5 cm in depth, and 78 cm in height, approximately 71.9 x 19.5 x 30.7 inches.
