Arne Vodder sideboard
This rare freestanding sideboard, model OS 37, was designed by Arne Vodder and produced by Sibast Møbler in Denmark during the 1950s. The piece exemplifies the refined craftsmanship and material sensitivity characteristic of Danish mid-century modern design.
Constructed from richly grained rosewood, the sideboard displays a warm, deep reddish-brown hue accented by pronounced black veining that flows rhythmically across the tambour doors. These sliding tambour doors, a signature feature in Vodder’s work, retract smoothly into the cabinet sides, revealing an interior fitted with adjustable shelving and two shallow trays. The interior is finished in a lighter wood tone, providing a warm contrast to the darker exterior.
The cabinet rests on an elevated, tapering leg frame crafted from solid rosewood, supported by structural stretchers at the base that enhance stability and emphasize the horizontal lines. The overall form is rectilinear with softened edges and meticulous joinery, reflecting Vodder’s balanced approach to form and function.
Arne Vodder (1926–2009), trained under Finn Juhl, is celebrated for his understated elegance, organic forms, and use of quality materials paired with thoughtful details. His furniture achieved international acclaim in the mid-20th century, widely exported throughout Europe and the United States.
Sibast Møbler was one of Denmark’s premier cabinetmakers during this era. Collaborating closely with designers like Vodder, Piet Hein, and Helge Sibast, the company produced high-end pieces renowned for technical excellence and careful wood selection.
This sideboard remains in excellent vintage condition, exhibiting minor signs of age and use appropriate to its period. The rosewood has developed a rich patina, and the tambour doors’ sliding mechanism operates smoothly. The dimensions are 190 cm wide, 47 cm deep, and 80 cm high, approximately 74.8 inches by 18.5 inches by 31.5 inches.
