Asea ceiling lamps
These ceiling lamps were produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1940s and is a representative example of Swedish Modern lighting design. It features a hand-blown shade in yellow overflow glass with a subtly rounded, capsule-like form. The surface is smooth and glossy, with a gentle gradient in the warm yellow hue that becomes more translucent when illuminated, contributing to a soft ambient light quality.
The glass shade is suspended from a slender rod and mounting hardware in nickel-plated metal. The connection at the top of the glass dome is capped by a shallow, circular nickel-plated dish that mirrors the curve of the shade, visually balancing the heavier form below. The overall silhouette is elegant and modest, prioritizing material expression and functional clarity—both hallmarks of Scandinavian design during this period.
ASEA, originally a Swedish industrial company known primarily for its electrical engineering products, also produced high-quality lighting fixtures in the mid-20th century. Collaborating with prominent designers and craftsmen, ASEA’s lighting line during the 1930s and 40s often integrated functional engineering precision with restrained modernist aesthetics.
The lamp shows signs of age-related wear, particularly in the surface of the glass and metal, but remains structurally intact and visually well-preserved.
