Bar stools

This very rare set of five bar stools was produced in Denmark and originates from Tarm City Hall, making it a piece with notable public provenance. The stools are carved entirely from solid wood blocks, adopting a bold, sculptural form that reflects the principles of Brutalist design. Each stool features a geometric hourglass silhouette with sharply faceted surfaces and deep, natural fissures that expose the internal structure of the wood. These linear cracks and splits, developed over time, are not flaws but integral to the aesthetic, emphasizing the natural materiality and the passage of time—a central tenet in Brutalist expression.

The wood surface displays a richly textured patina in varied tones of medium to dark brown, marked by visible grain patterns, radial cracks, tool marks, and rough-hewn facets. The finish is untreated or minimally treated to preserve the raw character of the wood. The tops of the stools exhibit prominent radial splits and a striking display of growth rings, underscoring the solid construction and monolithic presence of the pieces. Some pieces include visible iron butterfly joints embedded into the surface, serving both structural and decorative roles.

The design is both architectural and primal, evoking a sense of weight and permanence. The faceted shaping around the midsection introduces a refined sculptural rhythm while retaining the blocky massing typical of Brutalism.

Their condition is consistent with intended rough-hewn aesthetics and historical public use. The surfaces retain the original rawness and authenticity, with no structural instability. The wood remains solid and sound, with patinated age and sculptural irregularity intentionally preserved.

Each stool measures 38 cm in width, 38 cm in depth, and 69 cm in height. In imperial units, this corresponds to approximately 15 inches wide, 15 inches deep, and 27.2 inches high.
