Beck & Jung ashtray
This sculptural brass ashtray, model Ultima 15, was designed by Holger Bäckström and Bo Ljungberg of the Swedish artist duo Beck & Jung. It was produced in Denmark during the 1980s for Diverse Ting, a Malmö-based gallery and design shop known for its curation of avant-garde Scandinavian objects. The piece is a characteristic example of Beck & Jung’s experimental approach to form, where geometric abstraction and sculptural volume intersect with everyday functionality.
The ashtray is cast in solid brass with a square footprint and a striking, grid-like surface of concave wells arranged in a precise geometric pattern. This architectural treatment gives the object a strong presence, transforming a utilitarian piece into a sculptural element. The surface shows signs of natural patination, with areas of green oxidation forming in the recesses — a detail that enhances its tactile and visual depth while emphasizing the material’s age and authenticity.
Bäckström and Ljungberg were prominent figures in the Swedish art and design scene from the 1960s onward, known for their collaborative works that merged pop art, industrial design, and conceptual form. Ultima 15 reflects their interest in serial structures and modular design, aligning with the broader experimental tendencies in Scandinavian design during the late 20th century.
The ashtray is in good vintage condition with wear consistent with use and age.
