Information

A rare and elegant sofa designed by Bertil Söderberg and produced by Nordiska Kompaniet in Sweden during the 1940s. This piece is a striking example of Swedish grace and craftsmanship from the transitional period between early functionalism and mid-century modern design.

Executed in oak with original red fabric upholstery, the sofa combines a refined silhouette with sculptural softness. The high, wing-like backrest and gently curved armrests create an embracing form, while the subtly scalloped top edge adds a sense of rhythm and poise. The seat’s deep proportions and refined tailoring are accentuated by brass rivet detailing along the edges — a hallmark of Söderberg’s meticulous attention to material and proportion.

The oak legs and exposed frame provide a warm natural contrast to the vivid red upholstery, highlighting the harmonious balance between structure and comfort. This piece was likely crafted by master cabinetmakers at NK’s prestigious workshop, known for their close collaborations with Sweden’s leading architects and designers of the time.

A work of understated luxury and timeless appeal, this sofa represents both the artisanal spirit and aesthetic clarity that define Scandinavian furniture of the era.

In excellent vintage condition with minor signs of age and a beautiful, even patina.

Dimensions are 155 cm wide, 80 cm deep, and 107 cm high, with a seat height of 41 cm (61 x 31.5 x 42.1 in; SH 16.1 in)
