Björn Hultén sofa
This very rare three-seat sofa was designed by Swedish architect and designer Björn Hultén and produced by Haglund & Söner AB in Sweden during the 1950s. The sofa’s frame is crafted from solid oak, finished with a warm, medium-toned stain that accentuates the wood’s natural grain. While the silhouette is predominantly angular, the design is softened by gently curved lines along the backrest and base. The sides and rear incorporate inset cane panels, a detail that reflects the Scandinavian modernist interest in combining texture and transparency. This integration of woven cane within a hardwood frame creates visual lightness and demonstrates a high level of craftsmanship.
The cushions are upholstered in the original cognac-colored leather, which has developed a richly variegated patina marked by discoloration, staining, and softened surfaces due to age and use. Despite these signs of wear, the leather remains supple and authentic, contributing to the sofa’s character. The cushions are loose and generously filled, divided into three seat sections and three backrest sections, providing deep comfort within the sofa’s rectilinear frame.
Björn Hultén (1928–2008) was a significant figure in Swedish design and interior architecture. His work is noted for combining functional precision with detailed craftsmanship, often employing native materials such as oak and leather to express a distinctly Scandinavian aesthetic. Hultén maintained a long-term collaboration with Swedish embassies and official buildings, further underlining the refined nature of his design approach.
Haglund & Söner AB was an active Swedish manufacturer during the mid-20th century, known for its partnerships with architects and designers on both domestic and contract furniture. Their production was marked by solid construction, the use of quality materials, and a limited but well-regarded design catalogue.
This sofa is in structurally sound original condition, with the oak frame showing minor wear consistent with its age and use. The leather upholstery exhibits pronounced patina and natural aging but remains intact. The cane panels are complete and tightly woven, retaining their original integrity. The dimensions are 210 cm wide, 88 cm deep, and 73 cm high, with a seat height of 41 cm, approximately 82.7 inches wide, 34.6 inches deep, 28.7 inches high, and a seat height of 16.1 inches.
