Børge Jørgensen sculpture
This rare brutalist sculpture was designed by Danish artist Børge Jørgensen (1926–1998) and produced in Denmark during the 1960s. Constructed from a combination of polished and brushed steel elements, the piece features a vertically oriented, architectonic composition comprised of geometric and rectilinear forms. It is mounted on a square black granite base, which provides visual contrast and structural stability. The interplay between the matte and reflective finishes enhances the sculpture’s dynamic surface, creating shifting reflections and emphasizing the material contrasts.
The work embodies brutalist aesthetics through its raw expression, assertive material presence, and austere formal vocabulary. Its abstraction, focus on volume and void, and structural complexity connect it to both modernist and constructivist sculptural traditions. Jørgensen’s design demonstrates a keen sensitivity to balance and rhythm within a complex spatial arrangement, producing a form that is at once rigid in structure yet fluid in its overall composition.
Børge Jørgensen was a notable figure in the Danish design and art world in the mid to late 20th century. His oeuvre reflects Scandinavian modernist principles blended with international brutalist influences. His sculptural works are relatively rare and often explore experimental relationships between industrial materials and sculptural form.
This example remains in very good vintage condition, exhibiting only minor surface marks consistent with age and material use. The sculpture measures 41.5 cm in height with a base measuring 10 by 10 cm (approximately 16.3 inches high with a base of 3.9 by 3.9 inches).
