Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This is a set of ten chairs consisting of eight side chairs, model BM 61, and two armchairs, model BM 62, designed in 1957 by the renowned Danish furniture designer Børge Mogensen. Produced by P. Lauritzen & Son in Denmark, these pieces exemplify the functional and straightforward character typical of Scandinavian modernism. The chairs are constructed with solid oak frames, providing a warm, golden tone that highlights the natural grain of the wood. The seats and backrests are crafted with hand-woven cane, adding a tactile richness and visual lightness to the otherwise geometrically strict forms.
The design features clean, rectilinear lines with a particular emphasis on horizontal and vertical planes, reflecting Mogensen’s pursuit of modesty, functionality, and timeless aesthetics. The craftsmanship shows precise joinery and subtle detailing, such as the exposed dowel joints. The overall structure is visually airy yet highly robust, a hallmark of Mogensen’s approach to practical furniture design meant for everyday use.
Børge Mogensen, one of Denmark’s most influential designers, is known for his commitment to democratic design and his role in shaping what is now recognized as Danish Modern. Trained under Kaare Klint and later serving as the head of design at FDB, Mogensen focused on creating durable, affordable, and aesthetically enduring furniture.
P. Lauritzen & Son, the producer of these chairs, was a Danish manufacturer active during the mid-20th century, known for collaborating with leading designers to produce high-quality modern furniture. Their partnership with Mogensen resulted in several well-executed pieces that adhered to the principles of simplicity and honest craftsmanship.
The condition of the chairs is excellent, with the oak frames displaying only minor wear consistent with age and use, and the cane weaving remaining intact and taut. The set has been well-preserved, maintaining its structural integrity and original appearance.
