Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This is a rare and complete set of twelve dining chairs, model 3245, designed by the acclaimed Danish designer Børge Mogensen in 1961. These chairs are produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik, one of Denmark’s most esteemed furniture manufacturers, and they carry the original manufacturer’s label with model and serial numbers.
Each chair features a distinctly Scandinavian design rooted in functionalist principles. The frame is crafted from solid mahogany, showing clean lines and robust construction. The design is characterized by its gently curved, wide backrest that provides ample lumbar support, and square-section legs joined with sturdy stretchers. The overall profile is low and geometric, expressing Mogensen’s philosophy of human-centered comfort through simplicity and high-quality materials.
The seating surfaces are upholstered in the original red-brown leather, a warm tone that complements the rich hue of the mahogany. The seat padding in some of the chairs has dried slightly over time, a typical condition-related note for vintage seating of this age, but the leather itself remains in excellent condition with a smooth, even patina and no significant flaws. The combination of the original upholstery and structurally sound wooden frames contributes to the authenticity and integrity of the set.
Børge Mogensen was a leading figure of Danish modernism, known for translating traditional craftsmanship into modern design. His work with Fredericia Stolefabrik during the mid-20th century produced some of the most iconic and enduring examples of Danish furniture. Model 3245 reflects his focus on rational design, utilitarian value, and the use of honest materials, making these chairs both historically significant and timeless in appearance.
Each chair measures 60 cm in width, 50 cm in depth, and 70 cm in height. The seat height is 44 cm, corresponding to approximately 23.6 x 19.7 x 27.6 inches overall, with a seat height of 17.3 inches.
