Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This rare set of ten dining chairs, model J39, was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by FDB Møbler in Denmark. First introduced in 1947, the J39 has become an icon of Danish design, widely known as the “People’s Chair” due to its combination of accessibility, functional simplicity, and enduring aesthetic appeal. The model reflects Mogensen’s grounding in traditional craftsmanship and his interest in Shaker and vernacular influences, distilled into a form suitable for modern living.
Each chair in the set is constructed from solid oak, displaying a warm, honey-colored tone and visible natural grain that emphasizes the quality of the material. The finish is smooth and consistent, with finely rounded edges and carefully joined components. The structure is defined by a simple, rectangular seat frame, cylindrical legs, and a subtly curved backrest that provides ergonomic support without visual heaviness.
The seats are handwoven from natural hemp cord, arranged in a tight, geometric weave that enhances both the visual texture and durability of the chair. The organic material complements the oak frame, contributing to the chair’s warm and natural appearance. The woven surfaces are in excellent condition, with minimal signs of use and no visible fraying or distortion.
The condition of the chairs overall is excellent, with only minor wear consistent with careful use. The oak frames remain structurally sound, and the finish is well preserved. This set, with ten matching examples, is particularly rare and ideal for larger dining settings or cohesive interior installations.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was one of Denmark’s most influential furniture designers, known for his dedication to functionalism and democratic design principles. His work for FDB Møbler was pivotal in shaping postwar Danish domestic interiors, and the J39 stands as a key representation of his ethos. The collaboration with FDB, a cooperative furniture manufacturer, aimed to provide well-designed, durable furniture at accessible prices without sacrificing quality—an ambition fully realized in this model.
