Børge Mogensen dining chairs
This rare set of six dining chairs, model 3237, was designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark. The model reflects Mogensen’s signature commitment to craftsmanship, honest materials, and functional clarity, hallmarks of mid-century Danish design.
Each chair is constructed with a solid oak frame, shaped with round and square-section elements to balance strength and lightness. The legs are joined with traditional mortise-and-tenon techniques, reinforced by horizontal stretchers for structural integrity. The frame’s natural matte finish highlights the warm tone and pronounced grain of the oak, adding to the tactile presence of the chairs.
The seat and backrest are crafted from thick, natural vegetable-tanned saddle leather, secured with visible stitching and adjustable brass-buckled straps. The leather has developed a varied patina with tonal shifts and surface markings, evidencing age and authenticity. The saddle-stitched edge detailing and precisely cut openings near the upper backrest corners add subtle refinement and practical grip functionality.
Model 3237 exemplifies Mogensen’s transition from Shaker- and Spanish-inspired forms toward more robust and expressive seating. Designed in the mid-20th century, this chair embodies his principle that furniture should serve the user both in visual harmony and lasting utility. Mogensen (1914–1972) was among Denmark’s most influential designers and served as head of design for Fredericia Stolefabrik from 1955 until his death, producing numerous enduring models under the brand.
This set remains in excellent structural and aesthetic condition. The leather surfaces present a natural patina with signs of use, consistent across the set, and the oak frames are clean with minor wear. All joints and components are secure and original.
Dimensions per chair are 55.5 cm wide (21.9 inches), 48 cm deep (18.9 inches), and 80 cm high (31.5 inches). The seat height is 40 cm (15.7 inches).
