Børge Mogensen easy chairs
The model 2226, commonly known as the Spanish Chair, designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s, is a seminal example of Scandinavian mid-century furniture. This pair of easy chairs is built from solid oak, featuring a wide, low-slung frame and broad armrests that emphasize robustness and comfort. The seat and backrest consist of thick cognac brown leather, held in place by adjustable straps and brass buckles, allowing for flexibility and durability over time.
Børge Mogensen, a prominent Danish designer, championed functionalism and craftsmanship throughout his career. Drawing inspiration from traditional furniture, Mogensen reimagined classic forms through a modernist lens. The Spanish Chair, introduced in 1958, reflects influences from historic Andalusian furniture, notable for its strong materials and straightforward construction.
The chairs’ generous proportions and sturdy build provide a relaxed and inviting seating experience. The combination of natural oak and vegetable-tanned leather develops a rich patina, enhancing the character and warmth of the chairs as they age. Each chair measures 82 cm in width, 60 cm in depth, and 67 cm in height (32.3 x 23.6 x 26.4 inches), with a seat height of 33 cm (13 inches), making them ideal for casual lounge settings.
The Spanish Chair remains one of Mogensen’s most iconic designs, admired for its fusion of rustic elegance and practical modern functionality.
