Børge Mogensen easy chair
This rare easy chair was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1951 and produced by Tage Kristensen & Co in Denmark. Originally created for Løgum Kloster and the Krogerup Danish folk school, the chair exemplifies Mogensen’s commitment to functionalism and democratic design principles. It is constructed from solid oak with a warm, even finish and has been newly upholstered in a natural, textured beige fabric that emphasizes the frame’s linear simplicity and structural elegance.
The design is defined by a bold geometric form, featuring sharply angled rear legs that rise into a triangular backrest support. The wide armrests are organically carved and suspended between the angled frame with visible brass fasteners, reflecting the honesty of the construction. Both the backrest and seat are gently reclined to provide ergonomic support and promote a relaxed seating posture. The exposed joinery and clear structural lines highlight Mogensen’s training as a cabinetmaker and his adherence to the Bauhaus-influenced ethos of Danish modernism.
Børge Mogensen, a pivotal figure in 20th-century Danish furniture design, is noted for his work in public and institutional settings. This chair is representative of his dedication to creating furniture for educational, civic, and communal environments. Tage Kristensen & Co, the manufacturer, is known for precision woodworking, ensuring the chair’s high craftsmanship.
The chair is in excellent restored condition, with the oak frame displaying a well-preserved grain pattern and minimal wear consistent with age. The newly completed upholstery is firm and clean, carefully respecting the original proportions and detailing.
The chair measures 73.5 cm in width, 77 cm in depth, and 74 cm in height, with a seat height of 40 cm. In imperial measurements, these dimensions translate to approximately 28.9 inches wide, 30.3 inches deep, 29.1 inches high, and a seat height of 15.7 inches. This piece stands as a refined example of Mogensen’s early work, combining architectural clarity with the warmth and tactility of traditional Danish craftsmanship.
