Børge Mogensen easy chair
This is a rare pairing of the wingback easy chair model 2204 and footstool model 2202, designed by Børge Mogensen and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark during the 1950s. Together, they embody Mogensen’s mastery of form and comfort, combining structural solidity with sculptural elegance. The design is anchored in Scandinavian modernism, with influences drawn from English and Shaker furniture traditions, interpreted through Mogensen’s functionalist lens.
The easy chair features a high back with smoothly integrated wings that transition into softly curved armrests. This enveloping form is supported by slightly flared solid teak legs, which are subtly angled and inset into the frame. The brown leather upholstery is richly aged, showing a warm patina with creasing and natural wear from use. The backrest includes a built-in head cushion, enhancing ergonomic support and visual continuity. The armrests and sides are clean and tapered, lending the piece a poised yet approachable character.
The accompanying footstool model 2202 shares the same materials and aesthetic language. It has a rectangular profile with a detachable cushion in matching brown leather, resting on a solid teak frame. The leather on the footstool exhibits more prominent signs of age, including visible dry cracking, particularly along the edges and surface of the cushion, though it remains structurally sound.
Børge Mogensen (1914–1972) was a central figure in Danish furniture design and a proponent of democratic design, aiming to create durable, accessible, and timeless furniture. The 2200 series, including these models, represents his mature work—emphasizing proportions, craftsmanship, and long-term usability. Fredericia Stolefabrik, established in 1911, became Mogensen’s primary manufacturing partner from the 1950s, producing his furniture to exacting standards and becoming synonymous with Danish design excellence.
The chair is in good vintage condition with general signs of use and age-appropriate patina. The footstool shows more advanced aging in the leather, particularly surface dryness and cracking, which does not affect functionality but should be considered in condition assessments.
The chair measures 70 cm in width (27.6 inches), 90 cm in depth (35.4 inches), and 107 cm in height (42.1 inches), with a seat height of 43 cm (16.9 inches). The footstool measures 60 cm in width (23.6 inches), 60 cm in depth (23.6 inches), and 42 cm in height (16.5 inches). As a set, these pieces offer a refined and historically significant example of Danish mid-century seating, blending comfort, material integrity, and architectural presence.
