Børge Mogensen easy chairs
The model 2226, commonly known as the Spanish Chair, was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1958 and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark. It is one of Mogensen’s most celebrated works, embodying his philosophy of functional, honest design rooted in strong materials and traditional craftsmanship.
The construction is in solid oak with wide, flat armrests that emphasize stability and generous proportions. The seat and backrest are made of thick cognac brown saddle leather, fastened with adjustable straps in the back and beneath the seat. This construction method allows the leather to be tensioned and shaped over time, giving the chair both comfort and a dynamic patina that develops with use. The broad armrests were deliberately designed by Mogensen to serve as functional surfaces, eliminating the need for side tables in informal settings.
The Spanish Chair reflects Mogensen’s inspiration from traditional furniture forms, particularly medieval Spanish chairs characterized by wide wooden frames and leather seating. By reinterpreting these historical elements in a modern Scandinavian context, Mogensen created a design that remains both timeless and architecturally striking. Fredericia Stolefabrik, a close collaborator of Mogensen throughout his career, ensured the highest standard of craftsmanship in the production of this model.
This pair is in good vintage condition, with visible signs of use and a warm patina consistent with age. The oak frames have matured in tone, and the original cognac leather shows natural wear that highlights the authenticity of the material. The combination of solid oak and thick vegetable-tanned leather gives these chairs a robust yet refined presence, emblematic of mid-century Scandinavian design at its most enduring.
