Information

This very rare pair of easy chairs, models 2224 and 2225, was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1959 and produced by Fredericia Stolefabrik in Denmark. They embody the core principles of Scandinavian mid-century modernism, highlighting simplicity, functionality, and exceptional craftsmanship.

Constructed from solid oak with a natural finish, the chairs showcase the wood’s grain with clarity and warmth. The angular frame features a thoughtful arrangement of horizontal and diagonal supports, creating a robust yet visually open structure. The seats and backrests are crafted from thick natural grain leather, aged to a rich patina, and secured with leather straps and brass buckles, reflecting Mogensen’s commitment to honest, durable materials.

The slightly reclined backrest and low-slung seat offer a relaxed and ergonomic seating experience. Model 2225 includes armrests that extend outward in a clean, linear form to provide additional comfort and support. This subtle variation highlights Mogensen’s thoughtful attention to user experience within a cohesive design language.

Børge Mogensen was a pivotal figure in Danish design, known for his functionalist ethos and avoidance of unnecessary decoration, focusing instead on materials and longevity. Fredericia Stolefabrik is renowned for its high-quality production standards and close collaboration with leading Danish designers, making this pair a notable example of their craftsmanship.

The chairs measure 68.5 cm in width, 72 cm in depth, and 75.5 cm in height (27 x 28.3 x 29.7 inches), with a seat height of 30 cm (11.8 inches). The leather shows a consistent patina with minor wear, enhancing the chairs’ vintage authenticity and character.

Provenance

The chairs were a personal gift from Børge Mogensen to previous owner, who was a journalist and wrote about architecture and design, and who had been a school friend of Børge Mogensen.
