Information

This rare and visually striking pair of table lamps was designed by Boris Lacroix and produced by Disderot in France during the 1950s. The lamps are crafted from lacquered metal and display a playful yet sculptural form that evokes the silhouette of a dog, a motif that Lacroix explored with a refined sense of abstraction and functional humor. The design features angled, planar legs supporting a cylindrical lampshade, which is angled downward, creating a dynamic forward-leaning posture.

The color palette consists of a matte off-white lacquered structure paired with a black lacquered shade, offering a high-contrast, balanced visual impact. The geometry of the forms is highly modernist, with sharp angles and clean lines that reflect mid-century French design tendencies, merging decorative art with industrial aesthetics.

The condition of the lamps is consistent with their age and use, with light wear and minor patina to the lacquer, particularly around the edges. These signs of wear are typical for original pieces from this period, adding to their authenticity and charm.

Boris Lacroix was a French designer and architect whose career bridged the Art Deco and Modernist movements. Initially trained as an architect, Lacroix gained prominence in the 1930s and 40s, becoming known for his refined lighting designs that balanced artistic vision with industrial functionality. His collaboration with Disderot, a French lighting company founded in 1950 by André Disderot, resulted in several iconic mid-century lighting pieces that remain highly sought after in the vintage design market.

These lamps are an expressive example of French mid-century modern lighting and a representative piece of Lacroix’s distinctive approach to functional sculpture.

Each lamp measures 9.5 cm in width, 33 cm in depth, and 18.5 cm in height, which corresponds to approximately 3.7 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 7.3 inches high.
