Art Deco cabinet

This rare bar cabinet, by an unknown designer and likely produced in Denmark during the 1930s, exemplifies Scandinavian Art Deco design through its blend of classical detailing and modernist geometry, executed with decorative restraint. The cabinet combines rosewood, brass, and glass, reflecting the refined materiality and craftsmanship characteristic of the period.

The exterior is veneered in rosewood with vertically oriented grain, showcasing a rich reddish-brown tone. The case is framed by wide mitered edges with beveled outer corners, emphasizing the piece’s geometric clarity. The cabinet is divided into upper and lower sections. The upper compartment features two sliding glass doors set within a brass frame, separated by a central vertical glass divider. Inside, a fixed glass shelf rests against a lighter-toned wood back panel, creating a warm and inviting display backdrop.

The lower section comprises a two-door cabinet with bookmatched rosewood veneer fronts and small brass butterfly-shaped pull handles. The interior is stained dark and fitted with a single shelf. Brass strips frame the doors, mirroring the detailing above and adding subtle metallic accents.

The cabinet stands on a sculptural base consisting of a recessed central block flanked by outwardly curved side feet, also veneered in rosewood. This juxtaposition of vertical rectilinear forms above and curved volumes below is emblematic of Art Deco design, suggesting influence from contemporary French modernist cabinetry.

Although the maker is unidentified, the quality of materials and craftsmanship aligns with Danish cabinetmaking of the interwar period, known for bespoke or limited-run furniture for private interiors. The brass elements have developed a natural patina and oxidation consistent with age, while the rosewood veneer shows minor wear with a well-preserved surface sheen.
