Carin Bryggman easy chairs
This rare pair of easy chairs was designed by Carin Bryggman and produced by Carl-Johan Boman in Finland. Exemplifying the refined sensibility of Scandinavian mid-century design, the chairs display a harmonious integration of organic form, thoughtful proportions, and craftsmanship. Carin Bryggman, one of Finland’s first female interior architects, was known for her elegant and restrained furniture designs, often characterized by subtle curves and careful material selection.
The frames are constructed from solid mahogany, showcasing a warm reddish-brown tone with a smooth, polished surface. The wood grain is visible and consistent, contributing both texture and depth to the visual presentation. The overall structure features slightly angular lines, providing contrast to the softly contoured upper components. The joinery is meticulously executed, with transitions between frame elements clearly demonstrating the artisan-level production quality associated with Boman’s workshop.
The backrests and armrests are gently curved and ergonomically considered, offering both visual fluidity and user comfort. Their sweeping lines soften the geometric form of the base, creating a sculptural silhouette that maintains an understated elegance. The scale and positioning of the armrests are balanced, allowing for a supportive yet open posture.
The chairs have been newly reupholstered in a high-quality two-tone wool fabric. The palette consists of a soft off-white for the outer surfaces and a deep teal for the inner seating area. This color combination introduces a quiet contrast while maintaining the mid-century aesthetic. The texture of the wool complements the polished surface of the mahogany, adding warmth and visual softness to the overall composition.
The condition is excellent. The mahogany frames are intact, with a consistent finish and only minimal signs of previous use. The new upholstery is clean, tightly fitted, and free from wear or fading. Together, these aspects reflect both careful restoration and the inherent durability of the original construction.
