Ceiling lamp
This mid-century Swedish ceiling lamp, a flush mount model of unknown designer, is a notable example of Scandinavian lighting from the post-war period. Its construction features a large circular glass diffuser with etched and gilded figural motifs, mounted against the ceiling by means of a brass holder and central decorative finial.
The shade is rendered in frosted glass with a faint greenish-blue tint, which gives the lamp a soft, diffused character when illuminated. Around the perimeter of the glass, a trio of etched scenes depict mythological figures—likely representations of Diana the Huntress—each in motion with a bow and animal companion. These figures are rendered in a stylized, classical manner, alternating between white etching and a gilded gold finish that subtly catches the light. The perimeter of the glass is scalloped, creating visual texture and echoing the fluted brass element at the center.
The brass mount, with its flared conical ceiling plate and a petal-like retaining knob, adds a refined accent to the otherwise matte and ethereal presence of the glass. The interplay of materials—cool toned, translucent glass and warm, reflective brass—enhances the textural and chromatic harmony typical of Swedish Modern design.
Produced in Sweden, likely in the 1950s or early 1960s, this piece reflects the mid-century Scandinavian tradition of integrating decorative art into functional forms. While the specific designer remains unknown, the execution and detailing are consistent with the high craftsmanship standards of the period and region, and resonate with the works of contemporaries such as Erik Höglund and Carl Fagerlund, who also combined glass and brass in expressive ways.
This ceiling lamp is in excellent vintage condition with no visible chips or cracks to the glass and only minor surface wear to the brass components consistent with age.
