Erik Magnusson easy chairs

This rare pair of Z easy chairs was designed by Erik Magnussen and produced by Torben Ørskov in Denmark in 1968. Each chair features a chromed steel tubular frame and its original cognac-colored saddle leather, displaying an elegant interplay between industrial precision and organic materiality. The sculptural, continuous steel form creates the characteristic Z-shaped profile, a hallmark of Magnussen’s modernist experimentation during the late 1960s.

The seat and backrest are formed by thick, natural leather stretched over the metal frame, creating both visual tension and ergonomic flexibility. The leather has developed a rich, warm patina with variations in tone, emphasizing its authenticity and the chair’s age. The minimal construction, free of unnecessary ornamentation, reflects the Danish functionalist tradition—refined craftsmanship combined with a forward-looking, architectural sensibility.

Erik Magnussen (1940–2014) was one of Denmark’s leading post-war designers, known for his ability to merge sculptural form with industrial manufacturing methods. His work spans furniture, lighting, and industrial design, most famously the Stelton vacuum jug, which embodies the same clarity of line and functional elegance found in the Z chair. The collaboration with Torben Ørskov & Co., a company instrumental in promoting modern Danish design, further situates this model within the progressive design culture of 1960s Denmark.

Both chairs remain in good vintage condition, showing signs of age and wear consistent with use. The patinated leather has retained its structural integrity and surface sheen, while the chrome-plated frames show minor marks but remain stable and well-preserved. The two examples vary slightly in proportion, reflecting the handcrafted nature of production at the time.
