Information

This rare set of easy chairs was designed by Erling Olsen and produced by Erling Olsen Møbler in Bramming, Denmark, during the 1960s. The chairs exhibit a sculptural and inviting form that is emblematic of Danish mid-century lounge seating, characterized by pronounced organic curves and a well-balanced interplay between the upholstered body and exposed wooden elements.

The frames are constructed from solid teak, a wood favored in Scandinavian furniture for its durability and warm reddish-brown tone. The wood is carefully shaped, notably in the floating paddle-style armrests which extend seamlessly from integrated supports within the upholstered sides. The legs are slightly splayed and tapered, contributing to a light and modern profile.

The upholstery has been recently restored in a deep blue wool or wool-blend textile, offering a striking contrast to the warm teak frame. The chairs feature a smooth, high-back silhouette that transitions into gently winged arm supports, creating a visual rhythm while providing ergonomic comfort. The low, wide seat paired with a tilted backrest enhances the chairs’ lounge function.

Erling Olsen was an independent Danish designer and cabinetmaker active in the mid-20th century. While less internationally known than some contemporaries, his work reflects core Danish modernist principles including craftsmanship, functionalism, and organic simplicity. Operating in Bramming, Erling Olsen Møbler produced a limited but distinctive range of furniture, often in small-scale production with a strong emphasis on quality.

The chairs are in excellent condition, featuring newly completed upholstery and lightly restored teak surfaces that preserve the original finish and patina. Minor traces of age consistent with careful use are present, but there are no structural issues or replaced components.

Each chair measures 62.5 cm in width, 70 cm in depth, and 81.5 cm in height, approximately 24.6 inches wide, 27.6 inches deep, and 32.1 inches high, with a seat height of 39 cm or 15.4 inches.
