Estrid Ericson table mirror
This table mirror, designed by Estrid Ericson and produced by Svenskt Tenn in Sweden in 1950, is a rare example of Swedish decorative arts blending neoclassical motifs with modernist restraint. The mirror features a gently rounded rectangular shape with a pewter frame finely decorated along the perimeter with an embossed repeating leaf motif. The border’s looped pattern is rhythmically detailed, evoking classical ornamentation while remaining visually delicate. The craftsmanship of the pewter casting displays a precise and tactile execution, enhancing the mirror’s artisanal character.
The reflective surface is flat and cleanly set within the frame. The reverse side is finished in polished mahogany veneer, serving as the mirror’s rear support structure and also housing a simple wooden stand. The stand is shaped as a single vertical support with a horizontal foot, enabling stable freestanding placement on a dressing table or console. The use of mahogany introduces a warm contrast to the cool-toned pewter, and the finish retains a soft luster with visible aging consistent with its vintage origin.
Estrid Ericson (1894–1981), founder of Svenskt Tenn in 1924, was instrumental in shaping the identity of modern Swedish interior design. Though best known as an influential entrepreneur and curator of aesthetics, she also designed numerous objects for the company. Her designs, often rooted in a sophisticated yet accessible classicism, balanced tradition with a forward-looking sensibility. This mirror exemplifies that ethos, serving both as a functional domestic object and as a decorative focal point.
Svenskt Tenn, under Ericson’s direction, became a leading platform for modern Swedish decorative arts. The company collaborated with leading designers including Josef Frank and Uno Åhrén and became synonymous with refined materials and innovative combinations of form and surface.
The mirror is in good vintage condition, showing light signs of use, including minor surface wear to both metal and wood. The craftsmanship and materials remain intact and structurally sound.
The dimensions are 39.5 cm in width, 13 cm in depth, and 39 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 15.6 inches wide, 5.1 inches deep, and 15.4 inches high.
