Finn Juhl armchairs
This rare set of ten armchairs, model 192, was designed by Finn Juhl and produced by France & Son in Denmark in 1961. The chairs are constructed in solid teak with a warm, even tone, showing the fine grain pattern characteristic of the species. The armrests are sculpted with subtle curvature, a hallmark of Juhl’s approach to organic shaping and his desire to make furniture that appears almost alive. The seats and backs are upholstered in black leather, which provides a soft contrast to the wood frame and has developed a natural sheen over time.
The design is both architectural and inviting, with an emphasis on openness and lightness. The slightly reclined backrest and well-padded cushions contribute to comfortable seating, while the clean joinery and slender tapered legs demonstrate the high craftsmanship associated with France & Son’s production during this era. The leather shows small signs of usage and a pleasing patina that adds depth and authenticity to the set, while the teak frames remain in excellent vintage condition.
Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was one of Denmark’s most influential mid-century designers, known for introducing a sculptural, organic language to Danish modern furniture. His collaboration with France & Son, one of the foremost Danish furniture manufacturers of the 20th century, made his designs widely available and helped establish Denmark’s reputation for exceptional modern design internationally.
These chairs exemplify the principles of mid-century Scandinavian design, combining natural materials, honest construction, and a focus on human comfort. They are suited for both residential and public settings, from dining rooms to meeting spaces, and are a rare opportunity to acquire a complete matched set.
