Finn Juhl & Grete Kornerup Bang waste bin
This rare waste bin was designed collaboratively by Finn Juhl and Grete Kornerup Bang, produced by Torben Ørskov in Denmark during the 1950s. It embodies mid-century Scandinavian refinement through its minimal yet functional design, combining elegant materials and thoughtful craftsmanship.
The bin’s body is a tapering cylindrical form in black-lacquered metal, slightly widening at the top. Its rim features a subtle undulating profile, accented by cut-out handles wrapped in woven cane. This interplay between the cool matte metal and the warm, natural cane highlights a sophisticated material contrast and adds tactile interest to the otherwise utilitarian shape.
The lacquered surface shows wear typical of vintage use, including light abrasions, minor chips, and patina around the rim edges, contributing to its authentic aged character. The cane wrapping remains intact and evenly aged, exhibiting some natural color variation and slight oxidation where it meets the metal.
Finn Juhl, celebrated for his sculptural approach to Danish modern design, teamed with textile artist Grete Kornerup Bang to create accessories that marry form and everyday function. Torben Ørskov’s workshop specialized in producing such refined Danish design objects for wider circulation.
The bin measures 29 cm wide, 21.5 cm deep, and 34 cm high (approximately 11.4 x 8.5 x 13.4 inches).
