Finn Juhl table lamp

This rare table lamp was designed by Danish architect and designer Finn Juhl in 1963 as part of his FJ lighting series for the Danish manufacturer LYFA. The lamp is constructed primarily from lacquered metal and aluminium and is executed in a characteristic two-tone palette of pale powder blue and deep navy blue, with a light-colored interior to the shade. The circular navy base supports a slender pale-blue tubular stem, which bends at a right angle near the top and connects to the cylindrical housing of the lamp head. The original LYFA manufacturer’s label remains visible inside the shade and specifies a maximum 40 W light source. Contemporary documentation confirms that the FJ series was designed for LYFA in 1963 and included this adjustable table-lamp format.

The most technically distinctive element is the articulated shade. Rather than employing a conventional hinged joint, Juhl constructed the lamp head from nested forms: a pale-blue inner section is enclosed by a larger, rounded navy-blue outer shade. The outer shade can move around the inner element, allowing the opening to be positioned in different directions and consequently altering both the direction and concentration of the light. This principle of movement was central to the FJ series and has been described as an extension of Juhl’s interest in allowing objects to adapt to the movements and requirements of their users.

Finn Juhl (1912–1989) was one of the principal figures of twentieth-century Danish design. Trained as an architect, he developed an unusually sculptural approach to furniture and interiors, often separating structural and supporting elements visually rather than treating an object as a single continuous mass. His lighting designs are considerably less numerous than his furniture, making the FJ series a relatively unusual part of his production. The table lamp translates several characteristics associated with his work into an industrially manufactured object: clearly differentiated components, curved volumes, contrasting colors and an emphasis on physical movement.

LYFA was an important Danish lighting manufacturer and had established a reputation for technically and formally progressive lighting by the middle of the twentieth century. The company worked with a substantial group of Danish architects and designers, including Finn Juhl, Piet Hein and Bent Karlby. LYFA’s own historical archive notes that the company became an important lighting innovator and collaborated with prominent Danish designers as it expanded its use of new manufacturing techniques and materials.

Stylistically, the lamp belongs to postwar Danish modernism but differs from the restrained organic vocabulary commonly associated with Scandinavian wooden furniture of the period. Its lacquered metal construction, strong two-color treatment, circular geometry and mechanically adjustable shade give it a more industrial character. The combination of the spherical lamp head, cylindrical fittings, tubular support and flat circular base creates a composition based almost entirely on elementary geometric forms. The asymmetric position of the adjustable outer shade provides a deliberate counterpoint to this otherwise highly ordered geometry.

The lamp is in good vintage condition, retaining the two-tone lacquered finish and manufacturer’s label. The lamp show small scratches, marks, minor abrasions and localized wear to the painted surfaces, particularly around moving joints and edges, consistent with age and normal use. The light-colored interior of the shade shows some age-related discoloration and surface traces. These signs of use have not substantially altered the overall form or appearance. The adjustable shade remains operational and can be oriented in multiple directions.

The lamp measures approximately 43.5 cm (17.1 in) in height, 18 cm (7.1 in) in diameter and 25 cm (9.8 in) in overall depth. The compact proportions, broad circular base and directional shade identify it functionally as a table or desk lamp, while the articulated head permits considerably more control of the light than a fixed-shade design.
