Gertrud Lönegren vase
This rare ceramic vase was designed by Gertrud Lönegren and produced by Rörstrand in Sweden during the 1950s. The base is marked “Rörstrand / Lönegren / L 165 / HANDDREJAD” confirming its artisanal hand-thrown production and designer attribution. Gertrud Lönegren, active at Rörstrand between 1942 and 1967, was celebrated for sculptural stoneware forms paired with subdued, earthy glazes emphasizing texture and tactility, hallmarks of Swedish mid-century ceramics.
The vase features a globular form measuring 14 cm in both diameter and height (approximately 5.5 x 5.5 inches). Its surface is decorated with horizontal, geometric fluted bands wrapping around the body, creating a rhythmic, woven effect. The deep, hand-incised grooves cast varying shadows, adding depth and dynamic light interplay.
Finished in a muted yellow-cream glaze, darker shades collect in the recesses, accentuating the carved relief. The glaze exhibits fine craquelure consistent with its age and glaze type. Wear includes a minor, stable hairline crack running vertically from the rim and slight abrasion on the unglazed reddish-brown footring.
Overall, the vase is in good vintage condition, structurally sound, and retains the rich surface quality characteristic of Lönegren’s work.
