Gonzalo Cordoba easy chair
This very rare easy chair, model Guamá, was designed by Gonzalo Cordoba and produced by Dujo in Cuba in 1959. The piece is a striking example of modernist Latin American design, characterized by its combination of native materials, strong geometric form, and a refined sculptural balance between structure and surface.
The chair features a solid mahogany frame with a warm reddish-brown tone and a visible grain that emphasizes the natural richness of the wood. The seat and backrest are made of wide cowhide straps woven in a tight checkerboard pattern, giving the surface a tactile depth and visual rhythm. The hair-on hide varies subtly in tone from chestnut to deep brown, creating a lively organic texture. The curvature of the seat follows an ergonomic contour, providing both flexibility and comfort.
Dujo was one of Cuba’s most progressive furniture manufacturers during the late 1950s, and Cordoba’s work with the firm represents a distinct moment when Cuban modernism merged international design influences with local craftsmanship. The Guamá chair was produced in very limited numbers and was exhibited as part of Dujo’s avant-garde furniture presentations that aligned with the optimism and modernist ideals of mid-century Cuba.
This example remains in excellent vintage condition, with light wear consistent with age and an attractive patina to the leather and wood.
