Gunnar Ander candlestick

This rare and early candlestick was designed by Gunnar Ander and produced by Ystad Metall in Sweden during the 1950s. The piece reflects Ander’s distinctive approach to decorative metalwork, combining functional clarity with a strong graphic expression and carefully balanced proportions.

The candlestick is crafted from black lacquered metal with brass details. Six slender arms rise to different heights from the central structure, creating an asymmetrical rhythm while maintaining visual balance. Each arm terminates in a fluted brass candle cup, introducing a warm metallic contrast to the dark framework.

The curved metal rods are gathered at the base and secured by a brass collar, while the oval foot provides stability without adding unnecessary visual weight. Small brass feet subtly elevate the piece from the surface and reinforce the connection between the contrasting materials.

The candlestick remains in good vintage condition, with signs of usage and patina consistent with its age. Minor wear to the lacquered and brass surfaces contributes to its original character.

A distinctive example of Scandinavian mid-century design, the piece combines expressive form, restrained ornamentation and the material contrast characteristic of Gunnar Ander’s work for Ystad Metall.
