Gustavsberg ceramic vase
This tall ceramic vase embodies the spirit of 1960s Scandinavian modernism through its quietly confident form and tactile finish. Standing 38 cm in height with a maximum diameter of 13.5 cm, the piece begins with a gently rounded base that rises into a long, narrowing neck. The curvature flows uninterrupted from the widest point to the trumpet-like mouth, creating an elegant silhouette that appears both organic and meticulously controlled.
The surface is coated in a matte white glaze tinged with a faintly warm off-white hue. Its softly chalky appearance reveals subtle variations in tone and occasional iron-spot flecks, hallmarks of hand-applied slip and kiln firing. These natural imperfections lend the vase a sense of authenticity and depth, inviting close inspection of the porcelain-like texture under different lighting conditions.
Although the designer’s name remains unrecorded, the underside bears the impressed mark “K.C. Gustavsberg” placing its manufacture at Sweden’s renowned Gustavsberg factory. During the mid-century period, Gustavsberg was at the forefront of ceramic innovation, commissioning works from luminaries such as Stig Lindberg and Berndt Friberg. Even anonymous studio pieces from this era reflect the factory’s rigorous standards of form and finish.
In terms of condition, the vase is in good vintage state. The glaze shows light surface wear and faint handling marks, particularly around the lip and base, but exhibits no chips or cracks. These minor signs of age are consistent with decades of careful use and contribute to the piece’s authentic character.
This vase exemplifies the restrained elegance of Scandinavian design, where simple geometry and material honesty combine to create an object that is at once functional and sculptural. Its pure line and understated finish make it a versatile addition to interiors seeking a dialogue between form and space.
