Halvdan Pettersson bedside table

Information

This rare side or bedside table was designed by Halvdan Pettersson and produced by Tibro Möbelfabrik in Sweden during the 1950s. With its compact circular form and refined combination of materials, the piece is an elegant example of Swedish mid-century furniture design.

The table is constructed in beech and mahogany, with a warm mahogany top contrasting beautifully against the cream-colored imitation leather covering the cylindrical cabinet. Two curved drawers follow the rounded profile of the body and are outlined with closely spaced decorative metal studs. Each drawer is fitted with a small brass drop handle, adding another carefully considered detail to the composition.

Four slender, gently tapered beech legs give the table a light and elevated appearance. Each terminates in a brass ferrule, visually connecting the base with the brass hardware above. A particularly distinctive feature is the raised brass gallery running around the rear portion of the tabletop, both decorative and practical in character.

The two drawers provide useful storage while preserving the table’s clean cylindrical silhouette. Their curved construction and the extensive use of upholstery detailing demonstrate the comparatively elaborate craftsmanship involved in producing such a small piece of furniture.

The combination of warm timber, pale upholstery, brass fittings, and decorative studding gives the table an unusually sophisticated character. Its restrained proportions make it particularly suitable as a bedside table, occasional table, or small accent piece.

The table is in good vintage condition with signs of use and patina consistent with its age. Minor wear is visible to the wooden top, brass elements, and other surfaces, contributing to its authentic vintage character.
