Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamp
The custom-made ceiling lamp model T-517/12, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, is a highly refined example of Scandinavian modernist chandelier design. With its balanced geometry and sophisticated material palette, this piece exemplifies Jakobsson’s mastery in transforming functional lighting into sculptural, atmospheric compositions.
The chandelier features a meticulously constructed polished brass frame, radiating outward in a symmetrical arrangement of twelve arms. Each arm terminates in a socket fitted with a spherical glass globe, collectively forming a circular constellation around the central support. The brass retains a high degree of its original polish, offering a warm golden hue with minimal patina or surface wear, indicative of careful preservation.
The globes are fabricated from smoky blue glass, subtly tinted to provide a soft and diffuse light when illuminated. Their surface is smooth and evenly tinted, and the uniformity of the spheres enhances the lamp’s rhythmic visual composition. The smoke-blue color contributes a cool counterbalance to the warm brass structure, lending a calm, ambient quality to the emitted light. All twelve globes are original and intact, free from chips, cracks, or abrasions.
The chandelier’s scale—measuring 100 cm in diameter and 87.5 cm in height—makes it particularly suited for larger interior spaces, where it can serve as both a central lighting fixture and a sculptural statement piece. The structural proportions and even distribution of weight across the arms ensure visual and physical balance, while the vertical stem anchors the lamp’s expansive form.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson, renowned for his innovative approach to lighting design, often emphasized the modulation of light through materials such as glass, brass, and textiles. His work prioritized atmosphere over direct brightness, favoring diffuse light and layered forms. The T-517/12 model reflects this philosophy, offering both visual presence and a gentle lighting experience. Produced by his namesake company in Markaryd, this piece is an uncommon, custom-made example from his prolific career.
