Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamp
This ceiling lamp, model T-549 also known as “Carolin” was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. The lamp is a striking example of Jakobsson’s distinctive approach to decorative lighting, marrying traditional forms with tactile materials and a warm, diffused glow. The piece reflects the designer’s characteristic preference for rich textures and atmospheric illumination, and it illustrates the influence of both Scandinavian functionalism and decorative arts traditions.
The lamp features a large hemispherical shade covered in its original printed fabric, which is attributed to a Morris & Co. design—a pattern dominated by intricately interwoven floral motifs in hues of forest green, crimson red, pale yellow, rust orange, deep blue, and muted cream. The fabric overlay has a layered quality and when illuminated, reveals a warm translucency that softens the light and accentuates the intricacy of the pattern. The shade is internally lined with a light textile support structure, providing additional light diffusion.
Beneath the shade, a finely machined brass structure holds six upward-facing light sockets, arranged symmetrically around a central stem. The brass components are highly polished and maintain an excellent condition with natural patina that adds depth and authenticity to the material. The lamp is suspended from a domed brass ceiling cup by a textile-covered cord and central brass rod.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a prominent Swedish lighting designer and former employee of General Motors and furniture designer Carl Malmsten. In 1951, he established his own lighting company in Markaryd. Jakobsson became renowned for his use of natural materials and innovative approaches to glare-free lighting, developing a wide range of luminaires that married warmth and sculptural form. The T-549 model is among the rarer of his pendant designs, especially with original patterned fabric in such pristine condition.
The lamp is in excellent original condition, with minor signs of age-appropriate wear to the brass and preserved brilliance in both finish and fabric. All components are original, including the floral textile shade, electrical wiring, and ceiling cup.
