Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamps
This exceptionally rare set of six large ceiling lamps, model “Selectra” was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden, during the 1960s. The design is a striking manifestation of modular geometry and mid-century modern lighting principles, characterized by its architectural articulation and precisely arranged repetition of form.
Each lamp consists of interlocking tiers of lacquered metal elements arranged in cascading grids, forming rectilinear modules that direct and diffuse the light. The square shades are arranged around a brass support structure that anchors the system both structurally and visually. The internal brass framework features highly detailed mounting and suspension elements, offering both stability and aesthetic contrast. The height is adjustable, allowing the installation to be tailored to various ceiling heights or spatial compositions.
The Selectra model demonstrates Jakobsson’s departure from his earlier organic wood veneer forms, instead embracing a more industrial and modernist aesthetic without sacrificing warmth. The interaction between lacquered grey-white metal and polished brass reveals his skill in balancing material contrasts. The concealed bulbs provide indirect illumination, casting light both downward and upward through the staggered layers of diffusers, resulting in a soft ambient glow and dynamic shadow play when lit.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prolific Swedish lighting designer best known for his sculptural and atmospheric lamps. While his early work focused on wood veneer and soft lighting effects, his later designs—such as the Selectra series—explored new geometries and materials, always emphasizing craftsmanship and sensory experience. Pieces from the Selectra line are among his rarest and most architecturally significant works.
This set remains in good vintage condition with small signs of use, consistent with age. All structural elements are intact, and the patina on the brass has been preserved. The lacquered surfaces show minor wear, typical of 1960s usage and consistent with careful handling over the decades.
Each ceiling fixture measures 133 cm in width, 65 cm in depth, and 115 cm in height, corresponding approximately to 52.4 x 25.6 x 45.3 inches. These lamps function both as technical lighting elements and sculptural ceiling installations, suitable for significant architectural interiors or curated design collections.
