Hans-Agne Jakobsson ceiling lamps
This rare ceiling lamp model T-363/12 was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB in Markaryd, Sweden. The lamp exemplifies Jakobsson’s architectural approach to lighting design during the latter half of the 20th century, where structure and form are seamlessly unified into an expressive yet highly functional object.
The fixture is constructed from twelve cylindrical brass light units arranged in a staggered, grid-like formation. These elements are mounted on a structural brass framework composed of flat bars joined with exposed fasteners, reinforcing the modular design language of the piece. Each light unit houses a circular frosted glass diffuser, recessed within the brass drum. The configuration results in both downward-directed illumination and a sculptural, geometric visual presence.
The polished brass surface exhibits a golden hue with a warm reflective quality. The patina varies across the surface, especially on the inner structural framework, where oxidation and signs of age are visible. These characteristics contribute to the authenticity and period integrity of the piece. The cylindrical glass diffusers are evenly frosted, producing a softened and uniform light output when illuminated.
Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was one of Sweden’s most prolific and innovative lighting designers. Initially trained as a cabinetmaker and architect, Jakobsson began producing his own lighting in the early 1950s and quickly became known for his experimental forms, use of natural materials, and atmospheric lighting concepts. The T-363/12 model stands out within his oeuvre as a rare and architectural ceiling-mounted design, likely intended for public or commercial interiors requiring both functional illumination and aesthetic gravitas.
The lamp is suspended from the ceiling via two brass rods and corresponding ceiling canopies, maintaining stability and distributing the visual mass evenly. Its scale and formal structure make it particularly suitable for placement above large tables or in open-plan architectural settings.
The lamp is in good original condition, with wear and patina consistent with age. This model is seldom found on the market, and it is a compelling example of Hans-Agne Jakobsson’s more structural and industrially influenced lighting works, reflecting both his sculptural sensibility and mastery of light diffusion.
