Hans-Agne Jakobsson floor lamp

This rare floor lamp, model G-109, was designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced in the 1950s by his own firm, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, in Markaryd, Sweden. It stands as a refined and atmospheric example of Jakobsson’s mid-century design ethos, characterized by soft light diffusion, tactile materials, and sculptural yet understated form.

The lamp features a slender brass frame with a gently curved arm that extends outward to support a distinctive cylindrical shade made of layered silk fringes. The curvature of the arm adds fluidity to the composition while drawing attention to the cascading shade. The brass structure has developed a natural patina, with subtle surface oxidation consistent with its age. This patina deepens the tone of the brass and enhances the lamp’s vintage character without compromising its structural integrity.

The lampshade is composed of pale pink silk fringes arranged in multiple horizontal tiers. These fringes drape softly, creating a rich texture and visual softness that is both decorative and functional. When illuminated, the layered silk allows light to filter through gently, producing a warm, ambient glow that is diffused evenly around the shade. Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a leading figure in Swedish lighting design, known for his exploration of soft materials, subdued illumination, and layered construction. He consistently challenged conventional lamp forms by introducing fringe, textile, and natural elements into modernist structures. His company, Hans-Agne Jakobsson AB, was a prominent producer of experimental lighting throughout the 1950s and 60s, particularly recognized for its fringe lamps, which have become signature works in Scandinavian mid-century design.

Model G-109 represents a rare and well-preserved example of Jakobsson’s work from this period, merging sculptural elegance with atmospheric light control. The lamp remains in very good vintage condition, with the silk fringes intact and clean, and the brass components showing a desirable aged patina.
