Information

The rare floor lamp model G-123, designed by Hans-Agne Jakobsson and produced by his namesake firm in Markaryd, Sweden, is a distinguished representation of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design. Known for his poetic treatment of light and his sensitivity to materials, Jakobsson created the G-123 with a focus on warmth, atmosphere, and understated elegance.

This floor lamp features a cylindrical base and slender vertical stem, both made from brass. The brass has developed a rich, even patina, softening its original golden tone and lending the piece an aged, authentic character that enhances its visual depth. The stem rises cleanly from the weighted base, maintaining a slim and continuous profile that supports the overall verticality of the design.

At the top, the lamp is fitted with a wide, circular lampshade reupholstered in pleated fabric. The new fabric retains the form and character of the original design, preserving the warm, ambient quality of light diffusion that Jakobsson is well known for. When lit, the pleated shade casts a soft, even glow that is both functional and atmospheric, subtly modulating the light to reduce glare and enhance comfort. The broad diameter of the shade balances the visual weight of the brass base and contributes to the sculptural silhouette of the lamp.

Jakobsson’s intent with many of his lighting designs was to soften the starkness of electric light by using materials and forms that mimicked natural luminosity. In this piece, that philosophy is evident in the gentle diffusion of light and the tactile, layered effect of the pleated shade against the clean, cool brass structure.

The lamp is in excellent vintage condition, with brass components showing natural and desirable signs of age, such as tonal variation and surface wear, while the structural integrity remains uncompromised. The reupholstered shade is clean and sympathetic to the original material and proportions.

Hans-Agne Jakobsson (1919–2009) was a master of creating ambient, glare-free lighting through innovative use of materials like brass, fabric, glass, and wood. His designs for floor and pendant lamps from the 1950s and 60s are now regarded as timeless expressions of Scandinavian craftsmanship and are highly sought after for their elegance and atmospheric qualities.
