Information

This floor lamp is attributed to Hans Bergström and was produced by ASEA in Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is constructed entirely from brass, with a matte golden hue that has developed a gentle patina over time. Its structural composition emphasizes precision engineering and adjustability, featuring a vertical shaft intersected by a horizontal arm that can pivot and extend through a ball-joint mechanism clearly marked with “ASEA PATENT”

The base is triangular in plan with subtly rounded corners and rests on three low-profile metal feet. This solid, weighty form ensures stability and aligns aesthetically with the minimal mechanical clarity of the rest of the lamp. The shade is conical, made from yellow textile fabric with gathered pleats at the top, and displays an asymmetric tilt that directs light downward and outward. When illuminated, the shade casts a warm, ambient glow, enhancing the brass tones and highlighting the lamp’s geometric precision.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), a pioneer of Swedish lighting design, co-founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and contributed significantly to Scandinavian modernism through his architectural approach to lighting. While this model was produced by ASEA, not Ateljé Lyktan, the formal vocabulary—particularly the use of angled arms, functional detailing, and fabric diffusion—strongly echoes Bergström’s established design language. ASEA, primarily known as an electrical manufacturer, produced high-quality lighting fixtures during the mid-century period and frequently collaborated with leading designers.

The condition of the lamp is very good. The brass components show minor wear, including light surface marks and oxidation consistent with age. The yellow fabric shade is clean and structurally intact, with even coloration and no major staining or fraying. The original mechanics of the adjustable joint remain functional and firm.

The dimensions are 23.5 cm in width, 100 cm in depth, and 110 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 9.3 inches wide, 39.4 inches deep, and 43.3 inches high.
