Information

This rare floor lamp, model 544, was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden. The lamp combines a sculpted teak stem with a machined brass shade and fittings, characteristic of Bergström’s early post-war luminaires. The shaft is executed in solid teak with a tapering profile and an elongated oval opening cut through the center, a detail that lightens the form visually while demonstrating precise woodworking. The base is made of cast iron and polished brass, stamped with the Ateljé Lyktan Åhus maker’s mark and the model number 544.

The brass shade has a slightly flared silhouette with vertical ventilation slots at the top and a small lever for adjusting the direction of light. The surface shows patina and minor marks typical for untreated brass, consistent with age and use. The adjustable arm is also made of brass and is connected to the teak stem through a pivoting mechanism that allows controlled movement. The electrical cord runs discreetly along the rear of the wooden shaft, maintaining the lamp’s clean vertical geometry.

Hans Bergström founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and served as its artistic director for several decades. His lighting designs of the 1940s and 1950s often combined natural materials such as wood with polished metals, creating functional lamps that expressed Scandinavian Modern ideals of craftsmanship and clarity. Model 544 reflects this approach, providing a narrowly directed light suitable for reading while functioning as a sculptural object within an interior.

The lamp is in good vintage condition with signs of usage and patina across the brass surfaces and smaller marks to the teak, in line with its age and materials. It retains its original character while showing natural wear from decades of use.
