Hans Bergström floor lamp
This is a rare height-adjustable floor lamp, model 545, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp is a fine representation of Swedish modernism, blending functionality and refined material choices with understated elegance. It features a telescopic design allowing for height adjustment, with a screw knob mechanism in patinated brass that controls the extension.
The lamp’s shaft is wrapped in dark brown leather, applied in a continuous spiral that enhances both grip and visual texture. The upper section, along with the articulated arm, is executed in brass, showing a warm patina consistent with age. The three-legged base is composed of slender brass rods terminating in small spherical feet, contributing to the visual lightness of the piece while offering excellent stability.
A new white textile lampshade has been fitted to the original brass socket mount, maintaining the historical silhouette while updating the lamp for contemporary use. The shade has a conical form that directs light downward, ideal for reading or ambient lighting. The lamp has been professionally rewired and is in excellent condition, with signs of age-appropriate wear limited to the brass surfaces, which retain a natural patina.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of the pivotal figures in Swedish lighting design during the mid-20th century. He co-founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934 and served as its creative director for several decades. Bergström’s designs reflect a balance between modernist functionality and handcrafted elegance, often combining materials such as metal, wood, leather, and glass. His lighting objects from the 1940s and 1950s remain highly regarded for their innovative approach to form and light diffusion.
Ateljé Lyktan, founded in Åhus, Sweden, was central to shaping Swedish lighting aesthetics during the postwar period. The company fostered a close collaboration between artisans and industrial designers, producing limited-run, high-quality lighting fixtures that are now sought-after collector’s items.
