Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This very rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1940s. The pendant features six spherical shades arranged in a radial cluster, suspended from a central brass canopy by individual textile-covered cords. Each globe-shaped diffuser is crafted from sprayed plastic over a wire frame, a technique characteristic of Bergström’s lighting designs from the early to mid-20th century. The diffusers have a softly textured, translucent surface that emits a warm and evenly diffused light.
The cream-colored shades display subtle vertical ribbing that echoes the underlying wire structure, creating a lantern-like effect. These globes are supported by a delicate geometric brass armature, arranged in a staggered yet balanced composition. The fixture reflects a sculptural approach to lighting, merging minimal structural expression with an atmospheric glow.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996), co-founder of Ateljé Lyktan in 1934, was a pioneering figure in Swedish lighting design. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, he integrated functionalist principles with organic forms and experimented with modern materials. Under his leadership, Ateljé Lyktan became a leading manufacturer known for innovative use of plastics and perforated metal.
This lamp is in very good vintage condition. The shades show minor age-related yellowing typical of the material, while the brass components exhibit a warm patina. The fixture remains structurally sound, and the wiring has been inspected for safety.
Dimensions are 68 cm in diameter and 82 cm in height (approximately 26.8 by 32.3 inches).
