Hans Bergström ceiling lamp
This rare ceiling lamp was designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden during the 1950s. The lamp is a notable example of Scandinavian mid-century lighting design, combining functional construction with sculptural form and soft material contrasts. The design is characterized by its distinctive double-conical shape, composed of a shallow upper shade that flares broadly outward and a tapering lower cone, both clad in a pleated fabric diffuser. The entire structure is suspended by three slender cords from a polished brass canopy, which introduces a metallic accent to the otherwise textile-dominant composition.
The outer surface of the shade is wrapped in a white fabric with a subtle yellow cast, which, when illuminated, takes on a golden hue and emits a soft, ambient glow. The pleating of the fabric not only diffuses light gently but also creates a rhythmic vertical articulation that reinforces the lamp’s sculptural silhouette. In lit conditions, the fixture produces both downlight through the lower opening and a surrounding corona of softened light that reflects gently off the pleats.
Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was one of Sweden’s most influential lighting designers and the founder of Ateljé Lyktan, a company known for its commitment to craftsmanship and modern forms. His designs often experimented with fabric, light diffusion, and architectural geometry, establishing him as a pioneer in Scandinavian lighting. This particular ceiling fixture typifies Bergström’s approach—functional, decorative, and distinctly architectural—marking a departure from ornate prewar lighting towards lighter, more material-conscious modernism.
The condition of the lamp is excellent. The brass canopy shows a warm patina with minor signs of age. The fabric is clean and structurally intact, with no notable discoloration, sagging, or damage to the pleated construction. The suspension system remains stable and the light dispersion is even and atmospheric.
