Information

This is a rare example of model no. 500, a dual-shade floor lamp designed by Hans Bergström and produced by Ateljé Lyktan in Åhus, Sweden, during the 1940s. The lamp reflects Bergström’s early postwar design ethos, combining material refinement with sculptural sensibility, and exemplifies his important contributions to Scandinavian lighting design.

The lamp is constructed with a solid brass structure and a central stem wrapped in tan-colored leather, adding warmth and texture to the otherwise minimal form. The patina on the brass reveals the natural aging process and aligns with the vintage character of the piece. A leaf-shaped brass fitting on the leather-wrapped column serves as a decorative and structural detail, marking the transition from base to stem with subtle elegance.

Each of the two curved brass arms supports a conical shade, angled outward in a gentle symmetrical arc. The original or period-appropriate shades are covered in a woven textile, producing a soft, diffuse light and complementing the warm tones of the brass and leather. The adjustable necks allow for articulation, making the lamp functional for both ambient and task lighting.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996) was a pivotal figure in Swedish lighting design, having founded Ateljé Lyktan in 1934. His works from the 1930s and 1940s are known for combining craftsmanship with industrial methods, and often feature high-quality materials such as brass, glass, and leather. Model no. 500 is a particularly rare design and demonstrates Bergström’s early interest in flexible lighting systems and tactile surface treatments.

The lamp remains in good original condition, with visible signs of age and use, including wear to the brass and leather surfaces. These elements contribute to the authenticity of the piece and are consistent with its age and materials.

The dimensions of the lamp are 23 cm wide, 129 cm deep, and 135 cm high (approximately 9 x 50.8 x 53.1 inches).
