Information

This very rare table lamp, designed by Hans Bergström and produced by ASEA in Sweden, represents a sophisticated interplay of materials and forms typical of Swedish mid-century lighting design. Bergström, known for his attention to both light quality and visual form, created lighting that combined refined craftsmanship with architectural clarity—qualities clearly evident in this piece.

The lamp features a conical shade in golden brass, flaring gently from a narrow apex to a wider base. This form directs light downward while allowing soft ambient diffusion, aided by the reflective inner surface of the brass. The exterior has developed a warm patina over time, with minor signs of oxidation and surface wear that reinforce its vintage authenticity. The brass finish retains a subtle sheen that complements the sculptural shape of the shade.

The support arm is a combination of brass hardware and a vertically oriented teak element. The teak, with its deep reddish-brown tone and visible grain, provides an organic counterpoint to the metallic brightness of the brass. This fusion of warm wood and polished metal—a hallmark of Scandinavian modernism—achieves a balance between industrial precision and natural materiality. The brass fixtures, including exposed screws and structural components, enhance the lamp’s mechanical elegance without detracting from its clean lines.

The lamp stands on a stable, compact base that supports the angled arm, giving the piece both functional utility and a poised, sculptural presence. Its modest dimensions make it especially suitable for use on desks, bedside tables, or shelves, where it serves as both a light source and an object of design interest.

Hans Bergström (1910–1996), a pioneer of modern Swedish lighting, was known for creating lighting fixtures that emphasized atmosphere, craftsmanship, and clarity of form. Although he is most closely associated with Ateljé Lyktan, his work with ASEA highlights a period of material experimentation and formal refinement that remains highly regarded among collectors.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. The brass surfaces show light scratches and areas of patina consistent with age, while the teak structure displays minor wear, such as small nicks or darkened spots. These features are consistent with age and enhance the lamp’s historical character.

The dimensions are 15 cm in width, 28 cm in depth, and 38 cm in height, corresponding to approximately 5.9 inches wide, 11 inches deep, and 15 inches high.
